Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 24 ounces marinara sauce
  • 2 cups water
  • 8 ounces uncooked lasagna noodles, broken into pieces
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Chopped fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it up with a spatula. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Stir in the onion and garlic, and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
  4. Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper, stirring to combine.
  5. Pour in the marinara sauce and 2 cups of water, stirring well.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low.
  7. Add the broken lasagna noodles, stirring to coat them with sauce.
  8. Cover the pot and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 25 minutes or until noodles are tender.
  9. Preheat your oven broiler to 375°F if your pot is oven-safe. If not, keep everything on the stove.
  10. Stir in the ricotta cheese until well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  11. Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheese evenly over the top of the lasagna.
  12. If using the oven, place the pot under the broiler for 3-5 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Otherwise, cover the pot for 3-5 minutes until the cheese is melted.
  13. Let the lasagna rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
