Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 cup sweet bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
- 1 can (16.3 ounces) refrigerated biscuit dough
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). This ensures the oven is ready once the casserole is assembled.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef, chopped onion, and bell pepper. Cook until the beef is browned and the vegetables are soft, about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally and use a spatula to break up the beef.
- Add the minced garlic, tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir well to combine and let it simmer for 3-5 minutes to blend the flavors.
- Pour the Sloppy Joe mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread it evenly across the bottom.
- Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the Sloppy Joe mixture in the baking dish.
- Cut each biscuit in the can of refrigerated biscuit dough into quarters. Arrange the biscuit pieces evenly over the casserole to form a top layer.
- Brush the biscuit pieces with the melted butter using a pastry brush. This will help give them a golden, crispy finish.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the biscuit pieces.
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the biscuits are cooked through and golden brown.
- Let the casserole cool for about 5 minutes before serving. This will make it easier to cut and serve.
